Join Voices for Children for our in-service training featuring local Howard County historian and professor, Marcus Sankofa Nicks! 

Thursday, November 14th, 6-8pm

In-Person at Miller Branch Library

There will be light refreshments.  

This training will offer its attendees an opportunity to reflect on effective ways to establish healthy relationships with youth in foster care. Participants will learn about local Maryland history, historic inequities and how it impacts individuals and groups psychologically and socially. This session will offer its attendees an opportunity to build community and interact with each other while also identifying meaningful ways to best support youth in Voices for Children through High Impact Practices. This training will engage all learning styles and will serve as a means of empowerment for both individuals and the collective group. 

Meet the Featured Speaker.

  • Marcus Sankofa Nicks

    Marcus Sankofa Nicks is a historian, educational leader and healer-activist. He is the founder of History Heals Consulting L.L.C, a business devoted to using African American history as a vehicle to aid organizations, institutions and businesses in fostering a healthy inclusive environment from a culturally relevant and trauma-informed approach. He holds a Master of Arts degree in African American Studies from Morgan State University and his research primarily focuses on the history of African Americans of Howard County, the state of Maryland and throughout the United States. He also serves as a college professor and is a former educator in the Howard County Public School System of over 12 years. In these roles he has provided support for students in the areas of mental health awareness, relationship building strategies, mindset coaching, historical awareness and cultural enrichment. He has also served as a curator of collections for the Howard County Center of African American Culture. His mission is to empower, educate, and inspire others through the lens of African American Culture and History while also bringing the community closer together. He is a proud husband, father and son who is passionate about his role in uplifting his community.
